Today we visit the island of Molokai. What sets it apart from the other islands I already covered is it is still very much untouched paradise. Both Molokai and Lanai are the islands to see if you really want quiet and rest and relaxation. The beaches aren’t as crowded it’s not as touristy, and it is rich in history.
First stop is the island Molokai. Plan on taking the 2.9 mile trail to the Kalaupapa Peninsula. This serene National park is only accessible by mule ride, hiking tour, or small plane. Ride your mule along sheer cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The Guinness Book of World Records reports these cliffs as the tallest in the world, at up to 3,900 feet! Once back to sea level you will have arrived at Kalaupapa. This was the home to the Hansen’s disease victims exiled to this isolated peninsula. Missionary and now Saint Damien spent his life devoted to caring for the ill until he lost his life to the disease.
Next, head on over to watch the sunset at Kapuaiwa coconut grove. Molokai’s most recognized landmark it is filled with hundreds of coconut palm trees. This ancient coconut grove was planted in 1860 during King Kamehameha V reign.
There is so much history on Molokai and its untouched beauty will leave you breathless. Whether you chose to spend the day exploring Old Hawaii, snorkel with the fishes, or just do nothing at all but spend some quiet time with your loved one Molokai will have something for you.
